     1. Describe safety procedures

     3. Operate & close down machine
Operate a light weight roller & plate vibrator
     1. Recognise operating components & safety procedures
     2. Prepare & start machine
     3. Operate machine
Operate a hand operated binder sprayer
     1. Prepare machine for operation
     2. Operate & clean machine after completing task
Excavate, backfill & compact a trench
     1. Apply the practical applications of trench excavation
     2. Demonstrate procedures of backfilling & trench compaction
Install subsoil drains including geotextile fabrics
     1. Identify sub-soil drainage components
     2. Install sub-soil drainage system
Reinstate base courses/ surfacing due to potholes & excavations
     1. Identify the causes of potholes
     2. Patch potholes using the prescribed method
Undertake minor chip/ spray & pre-mix surfacing operations

Course Content:

Read & interpret minor work drawings and material schedules
     1. Interpret basic drawings

Install & transfer peg levels using spirit level/ straight edge
     1. Transfer levels by using a straight edge/ spirit levels
     2. Transfer levels using a water level
Set out elementary works for level & alignment
     1. Set out profiles for basic road construction
     2. Set out open drainage systems
Check levels of inverts of excavation
     1. Erect sight rail profiles

Set out a subsoil drain from a drawing
     1. Recognise the purpose of subsoil drainage & the basics of setting out
